Match report

Injury hit AFC Wimbledon ended their poor recent home form with a superb victory against fellow play off rivals Heybridge Swifts. On a bright but blustery day both teams got off to a quiet start. Heybridge had a couple of early efforts saved comfortably by Andy Little whilst Wes Daly was upended on the edge of the box after good work by Rob Ursell and Dwayne Plummer. A generally quiet first half was brought to life on 35 minutes with the Dons first decent chance when good work from new boy Garrard found Ursell on the edge of the box. Ursell cut inside and unleashed a right foot drive which flew over the bar. The Dons were starting to get into the game now and got the breakthrough right on half time. A good ball from new striker Paul Barnes found Dwayne Plummer running in unmarked to slot home with a low shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The Dons started the second half on top with a couple of early Ursell efforts going wide. Plummer then chased a long ball forward and was just beaten to the ball by the Heybridge keeper Paul Nicholls who booted the ball to safety. On 51 minutes a Steve Butler header forced a corner as the Dons looked to increase their lead. Approaching the hour mark Heybridge began to come back into it with a low shot easily saved by Little and then a free kick on the edge of the box leading to a header from Jolly being gathered by the Dons keeper. At the other end of the pitch, impressive debutant Barnes earned the wrath of the referee when challenging Heybridge keeper Nicholls to a loose ball. After a quiet spell the dangerous Ursell went close with a dipping volley. As the game reached the final quarter Heybridge had their best chance of the game when a corner was flicked on towards the far post where fortunately for the Dons Dave Sargent was on hand to clear off the line. With 10 minutes remaining the latest in a series of chances for Rob Ursell saw a curling effort go inches wide of the mark as the Dons looked for the elusive second goal. The Dons came close again in the 88th minute when a Wes Daly free kick curled over the wall and just past the upright. As Heybridge threw men forward in search of a leveller Wayne Finnie had to react quickly to stop Jolly from shooting at close range. However, the Dons held on for a vital victory that keeps the season very much alive.
