Dates for your diary

The fundraising team is now approaching the busiest period of the season, with a number of events which should appeal to a wide range of Dons supporters.

On 27 February, we are pleased to announce our “Quid and a Quiz” afternoon. In the absence of first team football that afternoon, we will be opening the bars at Kingsmeadow and organising a number of events to appeal to supporters (young and old alike), including a quiz. Admission will be free, although there will be a £1 nominal charge for participating in the quiz. The full line-up of activities will be announced in due course, so make sure to keep the afternoon free in your diary.

Another new event to announce is Walk 4 Wimbledon 4, a family-friendly sponsored walk from Wimbledon to Kingsmeadow, to be held before the home game against Chester on 17 April. This walk follows the scenic route of Walk for Wimbledon 2, back in 2005, across Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park. Further details will follow on this website shortly. Sponsorship forms are available from here .

Tickets are on sale for Terry’s Tales, the fundraising dinner with Terry Burton, Neal Ardley, David Barnard and other guests to be announced, on 26 March. For further details, watch out on this website. Email here if you have any questions about the event.

Terry names a stong team for re-run cup game

The Dons turn their thoughts back to the London Senior Cup tomorrow, when last week's abandoned game against Tooting and Mitcham United will be played again.

Last week's game was abandoned after 70 minutes. The usual convention in such circumstances is that if a game is abandoned up to half time, spectators are entitled to free entry to the replayed game, but not if the game goes on into a second half. In the light of this, the AFC Wimbledon directors have decided that at least half of the club's share of the profits from the replayed game will be allocated for the benefit to a local charity. Tooting and Mitcham are also donating a proportion of their share of the gate to charity.

Terry Brown plans to use the game to give first team squad members some game time and he named a strong team for the game when we spoke to him shortly after this morning's training session.

"Tomorrow night's game gives me the opportunity of playing several players who need 90 minutes game time. Subject to one or two injury doubts clearing up, the team will be: Seb Brown; Ryan Jackson, Jay Conroy, Ben Judge and Derek Duncan; Glenn Poole, Josh Parker, Elliott Godfrey and Kennedy Adjei; Jon Main and Peter Rapson. Substitutes will be drawn from the first team squad.

"With only 17 league games left until the end of the season, I feel it is important that everyone in the squad gets adequate game time and therefore we shall be putting strong sides out in both cup competitions. If last Monday's game is anything to go by, we should be in for another very close encounter - we were fortunate last time as I don't really think we looked like scoring a goal on the night and I certainly don't expect it to be an easy game on Tuesday.

"Looking back on Saturday, the 2-0 win against Forest Green Rovers puts us back in a play off position. However, there are still 51 points to play for and the next three difficult away games, starting this Saturday at Cambridge, will no doubt have a bearing on our chances of a play off spot."

Dons complete the double over Forest Green

Wimbledon started with a bang against Forest Green Rovers, racing to a 2-0 lead in nine minutes. But a head injury to Brett Johnson after 25 minutes disrupted the Dons' rhythm and they never really recovered it from that point.

Will Hendry, Steven Gregory and James Pullen returned to the team who took only eight minutes to take the led when Sam Hattton chipped a lovely through ball for Will Hendry to run on to and cross perfectly for Nathan Elder to nod home. This came only a couple of minutes after a similar effort by Elder had been cleared off the line.

Almost straight from the re-start Ricky Wellard strode through mid-field and waited until just the right moment before slipping a perfect through ball for Hendry to hit a sweet shot home from the edge of the area. Only minutes later, another sweeping move put Lewis Taylor through and his snap shot hit the outside of the post and went for a goal kick.

After about 25 minutes, Brett Johnson went off with a head injury and in the ten minutes it took to insert stitches and get him back on the pitch, Wimbledon lost their impetus.

Forest Green went close to pulling a goal back before half time, including a strange incident when Pullen could only touch a deep cross onto Hatton's head, from where it bounced onto the cross bar and down into a massive scrum before being scrambled clear for a corner.

The second half continued where the first left off, with Forest Green looking unlikely to score but being very effective in disrupting the Dons' play. For a while it looked as if the game might erupt, after a series of strange decisions by the referee raised tempers and added to the stop-start nature of the game.

Terry Brown said "after the recent disappointments we started off very strongly and were good value for our lead. After Brett Johnson went off due to an elbow in the head, we lost that momentum and never regained it.

"I was pleased to welcome back Will Hendry who had a very good game and Steven Gregory was a massive influence for us. Also, Glenn Poole gave us something a bit different when he came on - he didn't get a lot of the ball but he moved it around well and showed some good touches. Since we won I feel I can say that the game was spoiled by a series of poor decisions by the referee who, let's just say, will have better days.

"I feel for Jon Main who didn't get onto the pitch today, especially as he was in very good form when we signed Nathan Elder, but he will get his chance again, I'm sure."

The Dons face Forest Green Rovers following Trophy disappointment

Forest Green Rovers come to Kingsmeadow on Saturday still in a relegation position but with their form improving - they have won 3 and drawn one of their last six league games. Wimbledon fans who went to the New Lawn for the away game back in October saw a thrilling encounter with five goals in the first 23 minutes in a game which heralded the return to goal scoring form of Jon Main.

Since that game, on-loan striker Sean Rigg, who was the object of interest from Terry Brown for some time, has left and is now at Port Vale on loan. During the transfer window, Forest Green recruited 19 year old Reece Styche to help to increase their goals-for tally. Styche was at Chasetown where he scored 13 goals in 15 appearances and he continued that fine run of form with two goals on his debut, coming on as a substitute to help to defeat Hayes and Yeading United.

Terry Brown stressed the importance of getting back into winning form on Saturday, when we spoke to him just before tonight's training session at Kingsmeadow.

"Saturday's game against Forest Green Rovers takes on extra importance after a couple of disappointing defeats. The squad is now back to its strongest level, except for our long term injured players, and I hope competition for places will ensure a better performance on Saturday.

"As expected with a young side, our form has fluctuated from month to month and it is important in the latter half of the season that we concentrate on more consistent performances to enable us to keep in touch with the play off positions.

"Going out of the FA Trophy means a slight change in priorities as far as the London Senior and Surrey Senior Cups are concerned, as I believe that it is vitally important that every player in our squad gets first team game time every week.

"Therefore, I shall expect the players who aren't playing on Saturday to take part in Tuesday's game at Tooting and that will be their opportunity to force their way back into the side. If the players currently on the periphery don't take that opportunity then it is down to them.

"Forest Green come to us having moved out of the bottom three as their results have improved recently and they will be looking to continue this improvement on Saturday. It is up to the players selected for Saturday's game to bounce back and put a smile on everyone's face again.

"We will certainly be aiming for maximum points on Saturday as our next three league fixtures are away at Cambridge, Luton and Oxford, all of them very tough games. But if we can return to the solidity of defence and consistency of play from December, I am we will get some vital points from those games. But first, we need to get back to winning ways on Saturday."

Kingsmeadow Live presents The Dualers!

KINGSMEADOW LIVE PRESENTS – THE DUALERS! Saturday 24 April

Doors 7.30pm, bar closes as 1am
Admission: £14
For more information, please call our booking line on 020 8547 3335

Kingsmeadow Live is pleased to announce that The Dualers will be performing a 90 minute set on Saturday 24 April! With support from DJ’s spinning bluebeat, ska and two-tone faves.

To purchase tickets, visit here.

The Dualers first came to the attention of the nation in October 2004 when they became the world’s first street performers to enter the UK singles chart. Debuting at number 21 with self-penned Kiss on the Lips, they sold more records that week than established artists such as Duran Duran, the Scissor Sisters, Ronan Keating, Girls Aloud, and Natasha Bedingfield. No small feat given the lack of backing and publicity.

In November 2005, The Dualers released their second single, Truly Madly Deeply, another chart hit, entering at number 23 ahead of Bananarama, Jamiroquai, and Corrine Bailey Rae. Following the release of a third single, Don’t Go, their debut album, The Melting Pot, was unleashed on the nation on July 3rd, 2006.

As The Dualers became increasingly popular with fans, they also caught the attention of established acts such as Toots and the Maytals, Ziggy Marley, The Beat, and The Blockheads, who all invited Tyber and Simon to support them at their shows. Word began to spread further afield with a number of appearances in Europe in 2007.

In December 2007 Kiss on the Lips gained national TV airplay when it was used in a number of scenes on hit BBC soap Eastenders. Later that month, Tyber and his parents, Bill and Jackie, were seen, again on the BBC, featured as part of the documentary series Dance Britannia.

2009 has seen The Dualers sell out the indigO2 venue at the O2 Arena on two separate occasions.

The band is fronted by mercurial brothers Si and Tyber Cranstoun. Their musical preferences were heavily influenced by their father, Bill, who helped to introduce ska and soul music to the capital as part of the Savoy Sound System.

'These local superstars are inching towards fame' The Independent
'When you start dancing to these guys, it's impossible to stop' The Sun
'The Dualers soulful harmonising has admirable echoes of Bob Marley and Sam Cooke' Q Magazine

Terry on Tooting and Mitcham

Terry Brown was grateful that last night's abandoned game won't add to the fixture congestion by being played next week.

"Monday's London Senior Cup tie against Tooting resulted in a disappointing ending for all parties, I must admit I felt sorry for the referee last night - he was in a no-win situation. It was 50:50 whether he was going to start the match but as both management teams wanted to proceed he agreed to go ahead on the understanding that the hard surface didn't turn into a frozen surface.

"Although the weather forecast predicted above freezing temperatures it was quite evident as the night wore on that the surface was getting treacherous. It was an awkward situation for our bench because as soon as you go 1-0 down you are reluctant to give the referee any views about calling it off, especially with only 20 minutes to go. Thankfully no-one received any serious injuries although Danny Blanchett badly bruised and cut the left side of his body.

"As far as the game was concerned it was a good-natured contest, with both sides giving their all on a difficult surface. Do I think we would have pulled a goal back? I am not too sure, with what I witnessed on the night, so Billy Smith can quite rightly feel a bit aggrieved. All I can say on the matter is that we will be really trying to beat you next time, Bill!

"A saving grace of the situation is that neither team had a game arranged for next week so the game will be played on Tuesday night. The clubs have agreed that two charities will benefit from a share of the gate from the rescheduled game."

Dave Honour

We are sorry to report that Dave Honour, a dedicated fan of the club, has died.

Dave made his career as an engineer moving south from his native north east to pursue his career. He only really adopted Wimbledon after his retirement, since he was a Newcastle United supporter until then. Dave's son Tim passed his season ticket to him after moving to New Zealand twelve years ago. Dave gradually 'got the bug' and enthusiastically supported AFC Wimbledon since it started.

Dave was a frequent volunteer, helping first the Dons Trust with its banking and then various other roles around the club where his cheerful and quiet manner endeared him to other fans and volunteers. He fell ill shortly after his 80th birthday in December and died last Thursday, 28 January.

Dave's funeral will be held at 11.00 am on Monday 8 February at St John Fisher Church, 207 Cannon Hill Lane, SW20 9DB. Dave's wife, Cathy has said that fans are very welcome to attend. She is happy if anyone wishes to send flowers or, if people prefer, a donation to the Haiti disaster fund.

We send our condolences to Cathy and Tim.

Wimbledon and Tooting must try again

The two clubs will meet again on Tuesday 9 February after the London Senior Cup tie was abandoned after 70 minutes when the Referee deemed the pitch had become dangerous and unplayable.

Despite the conditions both sides were willing to get the game going but it was quickly apparent that the far side of the pitch was very hard with players on that that side finding it difficult to keep their feet. The only goal came after 48 minutes when Paul Vines ran on to a through ball and shot purposefully home to give the home side the lead.

With players increasingly falling over as they took corners or slipping as they took throw ins the referee was left with no option other than call a halt to proceedings before one of the players suffered a serious injury.

Ross Montague out for up to eight months

Terry Brown made the following statement early this afternoon.

"Unfortunately today we received the news we half expected, that our young striker Ross Montague has ruptured his cruciate ligament in the game against Wrexham, on 23 January.

"The timing is exactly one year to the day from his previous cruciate ligament injury, in the other leg. I am sure that everyone at the club will join us in commiserating with this very talented young lad, who had just started to show some of the undoubted talent that he possesses.

"This couldn't come at a worse time as we felt that he had now fully recovered from the previous injury and was going from strength to strength.

"The club will ensure that Ross gets the best possible treatment. He couldn't be in better hands for the recovery period as Mike Rayner has now successfully managed the rehabilitation of four other players in the last 18 months. These were all unavoidable injuries that happened in the most innocuous circumstances - in Ross's case he fell awkwardly when an opponent was shepherding the ball out of play. There is no underlying reason or cause for the injuries, other than sheer bad luck.

"We all wish Ross a speedy recovery."

The Dons return to cup action tonight at Tooting

Terry Brown was looking forward to getting into action as soon as possible after Saturday's defeat against Workington.

"Having reflected on Saturday's performance, from a management point of view the only answer is to get back to basics again, and you can only really do that on the pitch or the training pitch.

"Several first team players will be involved in tonight's game at Tooting and they will be the players who need a game. The team for tonight will be: James Pullen; Ryan Jackson, Jay Conroy, Ben Judge, Danny Blanchett; Kennedy Adjei, Derek Duncan, TJ Rose, Will Hendry; Jon Main and Peter Rapson.

"The bench will be made up of Marcus Gayle's best young players. This is a very strong side and there will be no excuses for anyone not producing their best form.

"In light training this morning were Glenn Poole and Steven Gregory, who hopefully will both be fit and available for selection on Saturday. We expect to hear today concerning Ross Montague's scan."
