Alan on cup progress

Toyosi Olusanya led the charge into quarter-final

AFC Wimbledon marched into the last eight of the London Senior Cup on Tuesday night with a display that pleased Alan Reeves in the circumstances.

A double from Toyosi Olusanya and goals from Alfie Egan and George Oakley earned a 4-1 win at Redbridge FC, Joe Gent striking a consolation for the visitors.

With the first-team earning a creditable draw at Gillingham on Tuesday, it was a good night for the club. Coach Alan Reeves praised Wimbledon’s youngsters for coping with testing conditions in the London Senior Cup second round tie at the Essex venue.

“It was a difficult night,” said Alan. “The stadium was not the best and the pitch was a bit bobbly, but the boys coped well with it all. I told them beforehand not to get caught in possession, they had to play the conditions, and in the first-half they did that. We lost our way a bit in the second-half as we took a few liberties and got caught in possession, but overall the boys did well. We scored very good goals on the night.

“It is a chance to go further in the competition. The standard is not what they are used to, but it is a test for them in a different environment. Who knows how far these young lads will progress? My job is to coach them in the right way. I put on a DVD of the game today to show them what they can do better. We will take that onto the training pitch and if they learn from their mistakes they will become better players.”

AFC Wimbledon will travel to Cray Valley Paper Mills in the next round of a competition that the club last won in 2014. We will announce a date for this match as soon as it has been arranged.
