New stadium application

16 September 2016

An update after meeting last night

At last night’s Merton Council planning committee meeting, officers formally noted the Mayor of London’s decision to hand back responsibility for determining our new stadium application to Merton.

The decision in March by former Mayor Boris Johnson to “call-in” the application meant that the Greater London Authority (GLA) would be the body to decide whether the application could go through or not. However, the current Mayor Sadiq Khan’s decision means that responsibility for determining the application has now returned back to Merton Council.

Chief Executive Erik Samuelson was present at the meeting, which formally noted the Mayor’s decision.

“It was straightforward and took very little time,” said Erik. “We are now working with the council towards the section 106 agreement, while waiting to hear whether the Secretary of State will call-in the application, as requested by Wandsworth Council.

“We remain confident that this is a robust and high quality application. We believe that there is no need for the Secretary of State to ‘call-in” the application with the current Mayor having already made his decision.”
