Darius encourages local school children at community event
Darius Charles met Wembley hopefuls at a very successful staging of the AFC Wimbledon Girls Cup last week.
Coombe Girls School kept alive their hopes of reaching the famous stadium by winning the club event of the national EFL 2016/17 Kinder + Sport Girls Cup.
Organised by the AFC Wimbledon Foundation, 15 teams (year seven and eight girls) from schools in Kingston, Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth played in the tournament staged at Tooting & Mitcham.
Coombe Girls School will now go on to represent AFC Wimbledon in the South regional competition early next year after beating Cheam High School in our final.
Our defender Darius was present to offer encouragement to those girls striving to go all the way to Wembley.
AFC Wimbledon Foundation Sports Development Manager Joe Roberts said: “Once again, we had a great turn-out this year from the local communities that we work in every week. The standard of football is getting better every year. Darius kindly came along and gave up his time to talk to the girls. We had a lot of positive feedback from schools involved about the amount of game-time we offered and the way it was organised.”
The Girls Cup is a national competition which sees 10,000 girls from around the country compete for the chance to reach Wembley with the final staged ahead of the Checkatrade Trophy Final.
The AFC Wimbledon Kids Cup will be held next week, offering teams a chance to follow in the footsteps of Cleves School (Weybridge) who went all the way to the final and won it before our play-off victory against Plymouth Argyle.
