Local boys move a step closer to Wembley

Cheam Common Junior Academy got the better of a dramatic penalty shoot-out against last year's national Champions Cleves School to win the AFC Wimbledon Kids Cup.

The squad’s prize for winning is a visit to our training ground to watch the first-team in action and Cheam also have a chance of going all the way to Wembley in the next stage of the national competition.

Earlier this year, Cleves School (Weybridge) triumphed at Wembley before our play-off final win, but this year they had to settle for runners-up in the AFC Wimbledon tournament after a well-contested final.

Mr Warner, PE teacher at Cheam Common, said: “I’m really pleased for the boys as they’ve worked really hard recently and it’s great when something like this comes off. They are absolutely buzzing to go on and represent AFC Wimbledon.”

A total of 19 schools from from Merton Sutton, Wandsworth, Kingston and Weybridge participated in the tournament.

The EFL 2016/17 Kinder + Sport Kids Cup, supported by the English Football League Trust, sees 10,000 boys from around the country compete for the chance to reach Wembley with the final staged ahead of the Checkatrade Trophy Final.
