Wide-man interviewed ahead of Bradford game
George Francomb bounced back after a tough month by helping AFC Wimbledon to victory and he says that it’s a privilege to be playing a part in the club’s success after first joining four years ago.
Having moved up to sixth place in League One, Wimbledon host promotion contenders Bradford tomorrow aiming to extend an unbeaten run to nine games after beating Peterborough United.
It’s all a far cry from when Francomb first signed for Wimbledon, initially on loan, in August 2012, when the club were battling to stay in League Two.
Speaking during an interview for Dons Player, Francomb said: “It has been an unbelievable turnaround since I’ve been here, a great four years. It was tough times when I first came in and then we had a couple of seasons just stabilising in League 2. Last season was great and hopefully we can have another great season this time around.
“The manager is just trying to keep that winning mentality going more than anything. We are riding the crest of a wave at the moment and we just have to keep that going. We don’t need to get too technical with it; we just need to keep the team spirit high and the squad fresh. I think that’s something the manager has done ever since he came here.
“It’s always going to take new players a little while to bed in, but as you can see with the results it seems like we’ve got that feeling from last season again.”
Francomb is still fully recovering from a facial injury at Charlton, which resulted in him needing plenty of dental surgery, but he’s relishing being pitched back into match action.
“The corner came in, I stooped to head it, and Darius kicked me in the face,” added the wide-man. “I damaged seven teeth and it was not pretty, but I feel all right now. In training I try to be careful, but in matches I have to try and forget about it.
“In the first-half at Peterborough we were different gear. Not just on the ball but off the ball. Whenever it broke down we were on at them straight away to get the ball back and get our attacks going quickly. We were pressing high up in their half and it was a really enjoyable game to be a part of.
“It was a great atmosphere. Our travelling fans were unbelievable – it almost felt like a home game. We enjoy playing away from home because we get such a good following and it really gets us up for the game. We are just taking every game as it comes. We are in a good position at the moment, but we cannot get carried away as a group. We just keep believing that we can get a result in every game we play.”
