Barry proud to lead Dons

6 May 2016

Skipper has loved his time with the club so far

Captain Barry Fuller said it means a lot to lead AFC Wimbledon into the play-offs, but that hasn’t diminished his determination to earn three points against Newport County tomorrow.

During a dinner for the club’s kit sponsors on Tuesday, Neal Ardley said that Fuller was one of his best signings after the full-back barely missed a game in three seasons with Wimbledon.

And the 31-year-old hopes that he will be pulling on the captain’s armband for some time yet. Speaking during an interview for Dons Player, Fuller said: “When the manager says something like that it is an honour and a great achievement. I’ve played a lot of games for the club in the three seasons I’ve been here. I know how the manager works on a daily basis and he knows how I work. I’ve loved every minute of my time here. I enjoy playing for this football club and long may it continue.

“We’ve performed on the pitch this season and done the club proud. Due to where we are in the table everyone around the club is buzzing. It was a great evening the other night and everyone enjoyed it. All the boys appreciate the fans who sponsor the kit and the club. It shows how close everyone is here and that it’s a family club.”

No one was happier last week than the skipper to secure a play-off spot and a chance to earn another promotion after doing it with Gillingham seven years ago.

However, first Wimbledon face Newport tomorrow and Fuller says the squad want to end the regular season on a high in front of their own fans.

“We’ve been told the manager may make a few changes,” added Fuller. “The manager wants to make sure everyone is fresh and some of the boys who have not been getting game-time need to up their minutes so that they are ready when called upon. No matter what team is put out we want to go out there and win. It’s the last home game of the regular season and we want three points.

“We want to finish the season on a high and go into the play-offs with a good feeling. You have to put aside the big outcome that could occur at the end of it. We have to take each game as it comes and that’s what we’re going to do. We want to get three points on Saturday and then we are going to knuckle down for three cup finals hopefully. We were over the moon to secure a play-off place, but the job is not done. It is only the first step of what is going to be a tough run. We want to push the club to where we believe it can be.”

The full interview with Barry Fuller is on Dons Player, along with Neal Ardley’s update ahead of Newport.
