Simon's pride after leading the Dons to victory

Simon Bassey said the adulation he received from the Wimbledon faithful provided him with a massive source of pride after today’s stirring victory at Adams Park.

Our caretaker manager saluted the fans after the final whistle after they sung his name in celebration and Simon was quick to thank the Wimbledon support on the day.

Speaking to Dons Player, Simon said: “After six years supporting Wimbledon as a child and 10 years now as a player, coach and now caretaker manager, I take massive pride from that today. It is something I never thought would happen. The supporters were a big credit to the club and I thank them for the support they provided today. The board have asked me to look after things until we have a new manager appointed and I am happy to sit in as caretaker manager for now.”

Simon admitted he had made little changes to his side’s tactical approach as match-winner Sammy Moore and Steven Gregory were under instructions to keep it tight in front of the back four.

“We made hard work of it at times, but the boys gave me everything and I am thankful that Terry and Stuart were there as the boys showed all their appreciation for their efforts afterwards,” Simon added. “We were perhaps a little bit more pragmatic today. We had Sammy and Steven sitting in front of the back four, but then Stacy went off injured at half-time. Coming away from home we thought we had to keep it tight and try and frustrate Wycombe as they have not done as well as they would have liked. I thought it worked well at times. Sammy has a knack of scoring good goals, but I think that is his first shot at target this season. It was a fantastic time for him to do it and I am sure he will dedicate that goal to Terry and Stuart.”
