Striker off the mark in devastating style

Bayo Akinfenwa’s “Beast Mode” is up and running after his brilliant double blast last night, but the experienced striker says he will sacrifice personal glory for team success.

Speaking to Rob Cornell during an in-depth video interview for Dons Player, Bayo was relieved to get his first goals for Wimbledon after eight previous matches without a goal.

“I’ve always got to double figures in a season for goals and that’s the plan for me again,” said Bayo. “I was happy with my contribution before tonight without the goals, butI knew I had to get more goals. There has to be a balance and it can’t just be about assists for me. ‘Beast Mode’ is on now for double figures. Hopefully, on Saturday I can bang a couple more in. But three points for the team comes first and personal glory is second.

“Burton did not like balls into the box and we knew that. I should have scored with my first header and then my next effort went wide. I was getting a little bit anxious about getting my first goal. Then Barry Fuller put in a great ball and I did what I’ve been doing all my career and rose at the back post to score. Everyone was saying ‘your first goal will come’, but it was in the back of my mind I’m not going to lie about that. It was a nice feeling when it hit the back of the net.”
