Ben shines to earn a spot

Praise for 17-year-old after U-21s match at Canvey

Alan Reeves says he’s already earmarked the left-back spot in his team for next season to rising Under-18 player Ben Harrison after his impressive display at Canvey Island.

Though the Under-21s featured a host of trialists in last night’s 2-1 defeat, Alan is keen to promote from within after his appointment as coach – and 17-year-old full-back Harrison (pictured above) certainly fits the bill.

“From what I’ve seen of Ben I really like him and I would not want to stand in the way of his development,” said Alan. “I’ve got options to bring players in, but it would have to be someone really special to be ahead of Ben. I would not want to bring in another left-back to get in the way of Ben progressing in the future.”

Considering his squad contained so many players who had never played together before, Alan was very pleased with last night’s performance against a Ryman Premier League side.

“They were big and strong, but we had some good passages of play when we kept the ball well,” added Alan. “With nine trialists in the squad and only one training session to work on things with them I thought we did ever so well. A draw would have been a fair result. Some trialists will have earned another chance to show what they can do.”

Alan was impressed by Ghanaian forward Ferdinand Takyi, who scored Wimbledon’s only goal last night, and he will get another chance to shine.
