New skipper for AFC Wimbledon
has been rewarded for his influential displays since joining AFC Wimbledon by being named as the new captain for season 2013/14.Alan Bennett
has been announced as vice-captain after impressing during pre-season.Barry Fuller that the defender’s pivotal contribution since joining Wimbledon on 1 February and his leadership skills were the key reasons for his selection. Dons PlayerManager Neal Ardley told
Neal said: “We had a chat among the staff because we felt there were three or four candidates who stood out because they had captained previous clubs. However, we decided that the man who helped us through those tough times last season deserved it and that is Alan Bennett – he is a leader of men. When I looked around at our squad and how players respond to others, it is clear that everyone loves and respects Alan.
. We want those lads to continue doing what they do around the place. Bennett, who is a vastly experienced full Irish international, has previously led Brentford to the League 2 title as captain and was also skipper during his spell at Cheltenham Town.
The 31-year-old played in every League 2 match after making his debut at Port Vale last season in February and Bennett went onto make 18 appearances to help the Dons avoid relegation.
