Alan: squad shows progress

Captain's verdict after Chesterfield

Dons captain Alan Bennett said that his side’s positive result against League 2 leaders Chesterfield and the strength of Neal Ardley’s squad shows that progress is being made at the club.

Alan was paired with Andy Frampton at the back as part of five changes made by the manager after Saturday’s defeat against York City and it was a different story at the Cherry Red Records Stadium last night.

Alan said: “We felt as a group that we let the fans down on Saturday. It was important that we produced a reaction. It was pretty positive because we put in a good performance. We came out in the second-half and upped the tempo. We really drove forward down the flanks. Chesterfield have quality all over the pitch and we knew we would come under pressure for periods of the game, but we stuck together as a team.

“Competition for places will keep everyone on their toes and that’s what the manager wants. Will Antwi and Darren Jones had not done much wrong, but that’s the way it is at the moment and the manager had to disappoint a few players. Harry Pell came on and did a good job and Charlie Sheringham and Luke Moore were not in the squad. I could go on, but we just have good quality in the squad now. Players will be champing at the bit to get back in and that’s great for the club.

“We as a group of players understand the responsibility we have to move this club forward. Sometimes you have to take two steps back to take one forward. We are working hard and I can assure supporters that every player wearing the jersey wants to do well for the club.”
