Dons Trust members can nominate two charities

AFC Wimbledon will once again be holding matchday collections for worthy causes this season – and we’re asking Dons Trust members to nominate two charities for selection.

Every year we receive many requests from charities wishing to hold a bucket collection on a matchday. The need to balance these requests with Dons Trust and similar activities means we have allocated three matches for charity collections this season. One of these has been allocated to the Football League’s charity for 2014/15 and this therefore leaves two places up for grabs.

In August, we asked charities who wanted to be considered to submit their details to us. Below is the list of charities that have put themselves forward and more information about each one (website addresses for each are highlighted).

Crohn’s in Childhood Research Association (CICRA)

This organisation is dedicated to creating a wider understanding of a disease that has become more widespread among children since the 1970s. CICRA, based at Motspur Park, Surrey, aims to raise funds to support approved medical and scientific research. The ultimate aim is to find more effective treatments and an eventual cure.

.websiteIn addition to research into this type of inflammatory bowel disease, CICRA offers support to children, young adults and their families affected by Crohn’s by organising family days in different regions of the UK. These days offer parents, children and young adults an informal day of meeting others and learning more about their condition, including small ‘meet the expert’ sessions. Friends of Perseid School (FOPS)

Perseid School is a two-campus London Borough of Merton Day School for learners with severe and profound learning difficulties. It provides high-quality care for those people with learning difficulties and has earned a reputation as a Centre of Excellence, including for the National Autistic Society.

.websiteFOPS provides support for 120 young people across its two campuses and it was set-up in 1988 to provide ‘extras’ for pupils outside the statutory responsibility, including extra-curricular activities, days out and specialised equipment. The funding enables educational, communication, sensory, fun and life-enhancing facilities to become a reality for our children. To read more about this charity, visit the

The South West Thames Kidney Fund

The charity’s primary aim is to raise funds for research that will lead, step by step, to the successful treatment and eventual elimination of kidney disease.

Funds raised support the South West Thames Institute for Renal Research, based at St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, Surrey. At this venue, scientists carry out high-quality research into the pathology of kidney disease, developing improved methods for detection and patient care.

The two leading causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure. The estimated prevalence of kidney diseases in the UK is at approximately 8.5 per cent of the adult population – approximately 4.8 million people - with patient numbers increasing year on year.

The Encephalitis Society

The Encephalitis Society works to improve the life of all people affected by Encephalitis, which is inflammation of the brain.

The inflammation is often caused either by infection or through the immune system attacking the brain in error. Around 6,000 people are diagnosed with Encephalitis each year in England alone. Without treatment eight out 10 people die and even with treatment three in 10 people lose their lives. Those lucky enough to survive are usually left with lifelong brain injuries.

.websiteThe charity’s HQ is in Malton, North Yorkshire, but it holds regular meetings and events in London and part of its support service operates out of London. The Encephalitis Society receives no government funding, and relies 100 per cent on money raised by supporters. To find out more, visit the
