Player of the Year eager to add a glorious chapter to Dons history
Paul Robinson says he’s determined to play his part in AFC Wimbledon’s “remarkable” journey by helping the club to promotion.
The experienced defender is fully aware of the threat that Plymouth Argyle will pose tomorrow, but he’s eager to reward Dons fans for lifting the club through adversity after reforming 14 years ago.
Speaking during a Dons Player interview with Rob Cornell, Robinson said: “We are aware of what Plymouth can do and they are a good team. We will do our usual match preparation and be aware of their strengths and weaknesses, but we need to focus on our performance levels and get those right. That has stood us in good stead this season. It has been a long, tough season, like it always is in League 2. Everyone has put a lot of hard work in and Monday is about us trying to get that promotion to League 1. The prize for beating Plymouth would come with the size of the clubs we would be facing in that division.
“This club would not be here if it was not for the fans. The supporters built the club up, it’s owned by the fans, and volunteers play a big role in the way the club functions. For them to have a day out at Wembley is a reward for them and hopefully we can make it a really special day by getting the result we want.
“For the club to be playing at the best stadium in the world is a great advert for the club. If we can entice a few more people to come and watch us regularly it could mean a lot with a potential new stadium too. I’ve played at Wembley before (with Millwall) and it appeals to a large area, but to get maybe 60,000 for a League 2 final is incredible. It will be a great atmosphere and we have to enjoy it.”
Robinson ended the regular season as the Player of the Year after an impressive debut campaign with the club and he has loved every minute of his time here so far.
“It was a lot of change for me last summer, but with every passing week here the atmosphere has got better,” he added. “It’s a great place to come to work and I’ve really enjoyed coming in every day. The atmosphere from the manager down is really good and the players enjoy working hard for each other to get results.
“The manager has been really good at passing the credit onto the lads, but also taking the pressure off us when that needs to be done. He is trying his best to manage the week so that we are fresh and raring to go. We’ve come a long way and we have one more game to achieve what we set out to do. It is our time to take this club up another step in its remarkable journey.”
