Danny gears up to take on his hero Haydon

Wimbledon supporter Danny Wiggins will be taking on his hero Haydon the Womble in a challenge with a difference at half-time during the home match against Cheltenham Town.

Danny, who attends High Path Community Resource Centre, which provides day care for people with learning disabilities, is aiming to raise funds for Sports Relief by racing against AFC Wimbledon’s much-loved mascot.

The sporting challenge set for the pair is for them to race from opposing goalmouths and be the first to kick the ball from the centre spot. Danny (pictured above left) will be racing from the EcoHouse End and Haydon will start from the area in front of the Nongshim Stand.

It promises to be a fight to the finish and the gloves will most definitely be off come 3.45 on Saturday, 22 March! However, due to Haydon’s regular participation in mascot races, it was felt that an extra few obstacles were required to even the challenge up! As Haydon finds it impossible to walk past rubbish without picking it up, a few strategic items of litter will be placed out of his way so that he is tempted to pick them up.

AFC Wimbledon Community Volunteer, Clive Yelf, said: “Danny is not only a Wimbledon supporter, but he’s a huge fan of Haydon. If Danny is not too star-struck then it should be a good contest! Though Danny was a member of the Big Blast Band that memorably performed their songs at the Burton match two years ago, this kind of event offers a great opportunity to focus on the achievements of an individual. Danny will be helping others through Sports Relief and this is a great way of highlighting this.”

AFC Wimbledon and High Path Community Resource Centre in South Wimbledon, has teamed up to run similar events in previous years. Marie Miller memorably completed a lap of the pitch with Dons goalkeeper Seb Brown and last year Warren Palmer took part in a penalty run-up challenge with Pim Balkestein.
