Cup tilt starts with resounding victory
Surrey County Cup holders AFC Wimbledon Ladies began their defence of the trophy in fine style with an impressive victory against Victoire.
Hosting a side three divisions below them, Chris Lyons’ side marched to a 9-2 victory with Sian Wylie (pictured left above) netting five goals.
minute and it appeared to be a matter of time before a second goal arrived as there was no let-up from the Dons. Emma Keady had an effort over the crossbar before Wimbledon did double their advantage, Wylie netting her first goal of the afternoon.thJordanne Hoesli-Atkins put Wimbledon in front with a lovely curler in the 12
A fine team move ended with Rebecca Sargent picking out Keady with a lovely cross and she made no mistake to make it 3-0. There was no let-up from Wimbledon, in particular from Sargent, who claimed another assist by setting up Wylie and she produced a clinical finish to make it four just before half-time.
It took just six minutes after half-time for Wylie to seal her hat-trick, but Victoire did pull one back shortly afterwards. That produced a ruthless reaction from Wimbledon though with Wylie netting twice in just three minutes after the hour to complete her impressive five-goal haul.
An own goal made it eight for the Dons and Cindy Colliver followed up to net a rebound after Keady had been denied her second goal. A consolation for the visitors mattered little to the outcome, but manager Chris Lyons felt his side were far from at their best.
”Although we’re pleased with the result, parts of our game today were a bit slack,” Chris said. “We had some good periods of possession, but at other times we were a bit off-tempo. The same went for our finishing, which included good composure, but was also a little wasteful. Their goals were avoidable, and we’re disappointed to have conceded them, but I think the final score was a fair representation of how the game went.”
