Kit launch countdown recalls a Dons hero of 1988

AFC Wimbledon’s new Admiral kits will be launched tomorrow (Sunday) at 1.00 pm and the final feature in our month-long countdown focuses on Dave Beasant’s achievements on THAT day in 1988.

1 – The One Show

Wimbledon had plenty of firsts to boast about after their epic FA Cup Final win against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium in 1988. Dave Beasant (pictured above) became the first goalkeeper to captain his side in an FA Cup Final and then the first number one to save a penalty in the prestigious competition’s finale when he beat away John Aldridge’s second-half spot-kick. When his replacement Simon Tracey appeared in Wimbledon’s only FA Charity Shield in August of the same year, it was his first game and Tracey only played in one top flight game for the Dons before being dropped. After a long career with Sheffield United, Tracey returned to make one further Wimbledon appearance in 1995.
