An exciting competition for schools
AFC Wimbledon is setting a challenge for children with an artistic flair to design a flag for the York City home match and see their creations displayed at the game.
Ahead of AFC Wimbledon’s dedicated “Season of Action” fixture against York City on Saturday, 7 March, the club have organised a special schools art competition in conjunction with Kick It Out, the Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF), and Merton Council.
AFC Wimbledon’s commitment to equality and diversity go hand-in-hand with Kick It Out’s aims, and the club supports FSF in its mission to increase diversity within young followers of football. The competition also fits in with Merton Council’s aim to eradicate the use of derogatory language in schools.
The aim of the competition is for pupils to discuss discrimination in football or school, and then design and make a flag to combat this.
Every school that enters the competition will receive a £50 voucher to spend on art supplies from CASS ART based in Kingston upon Thames.
Schools may enter as many pieces of art as they wish and a winning flag will be chosen by first-team manager Neal Ardley and club captain Alan Bennett.
and all other schools that participate will be given 10 tickets (five adult & five child terrace) to distribute as they wish. The winning school will receive 60 tickets (30 adult and 30 child seats) to the York City match, where they will see their artwork displayed in the stadium alongside other entries,
The winning school will also receive a £250 voucher kindly donated by CASS ART to spend on art supplies. The match day programme will also feature a write up on the winning school’s design.
After the match the flags will be displayed in various prominent locations around the borough. Schools can use the DVD entitled “FREE” that they have recently received from Merton Council to begin their discussions about the use of discriminatory and derogatory language including racist and homophobic language. We will also be providing all schools with some follow up activities/resources that teachers can use in lessons to continue their work around respect and discrimination.
