Interview with a man who scored for Wimbledon and AFC Wimbledon
Marcus Gayle is still revered as a true hero with supporters after two hugely successful spells with Wimbledon and the former Dons striker has backed Lyle Taylor to shine at Wembley.
Marcus, who scored plenty of important goals during Wimbledon’s Premier League era, memorably returned to help Terry Brown’s AFC Wimbledon to promotion from the Ryman League in 2008 at Staines Town.
Now, the former Jamaica international would love to see another glorious chapter in Wimbledon’s history created at Wembley on Monday and he believes Taylor will play a pivotal role.
Speaking during an extensive video interview for Dons Player, Marcus said: “Lyle’s credentials are there and he has the goals to back it up. He is tall, athletic, rangy, and strong, but most importantly he gets goals. Hopefully, if Wimbledon go up he will be one of the main players for next season. I like what I see with him. He reminds me of a combination of myself and Efan Ekoku back in the day. With Jason Euell, Carl Leaburn too, we had four strikers who could do damage.
“During my first spell with Wimbledon we also had Dean Holdsworth, Jon Goodman and John Hartson. Wimbledon always had plenty of good forwards within the club who could play in good positions. From what I have seen of Lyle he can play either side of a main striker or up there as a partnership with another striker. That helps with his development and career.”

In the interview with Marcus, he said that his former Dons team-mate Neal Ardley always looked destined to be a manager and he spoke with passion about what the club means to him.
“They were great times, fun times, and involved a lot of learning,” said Marcus. “I came back to AFC Wimbledon nine years ago when the club were in the Ryman League and Terry Brown was assembling a squad to try and get out of that division, which we did via the play-offs at Staines Town. It was my last playing season and it was a great year.
“We had good players coming through that were being nurtured and the fans were amazing as usual. It was the continuation of Wimbledon fans from back in the day to AFC Wimbledon fans – they are the same people and the same community. To play for them was amazing.”
