Centre-back signs on loan from York

Neal Ardley has moved quickly to bolster Wimbledon’s defensive ranks by bringing in York City centre-back Dave Winfield on a one month loan deal.

Winfield is an experienced 6 ft 3 inch defender and Neal Ardley said he fits the bill for Wimbledon with Will Nightingale out injured, Jake Goodman not yet ready for a return and Mark Phillips suspended.

The 26-year-old started his career with Aldershot Town and had three seasons with Wycombe Wanderers, before joining Shrewsbury Town in 2013/14 and making 17 appearances for Saturday’s opponents.

Since moving to York City in the summer, Winfield has started just four league games with his progress interrupted by a thigh injury.

The paperwork has been completed in time for Winfield to be included in Wimbledon’s squad for Saturday and he could face his old club Shrewsbury at the Greenhous Meadow.

Neal Ardley said: “Dave has been on our radar for a while. We tried to sign him during the summer but he was out of our range and we looked at him again in January before we signed Deji Oshilaja. We had a look at other options including young defenders, but they were players who liked to play as left sided centre backs. Deji prefers to play on the left side and we wanted someone to play alongside him.

“At this time Dave fitted the bill for us. He is a big, powerful centre back who is a good talker. With six games in 24 days coming up we needed someone like him.”

A video interview with Neil Cox ahead of Saturday's trip to Shrewsbury is now on Dons Player.
