AFC Wimbledon Ladies make signing for title run-in
AFC Wimbledon Ladies edged closer to winning the title on Sunday – and manager Chris Lyons has strengthened his squad for the run-in by signing Laura Low from Oxford United Ladies.
Low (pictured above) came close to netting on her debut after entering the fray as a substitute in the 2-1 win at London Corinthians on Sunday and Lyons expects the player to be a key addition in the coming months.
Our league has a ruling of waiting 120 days before playing a WSL player and as her last game was on 19 August she couldn’t wait to put on an AFC Wimbledon shirt. “I’ve known ‘Lowey’ for a number of years so I know we are getting a player who will fit into our squad very well,” said Lyons. “She is a born goal scorer with frightening pace and her work-rate for the team is incredibly high. With her spell in the Women’s Super League, there is also the bonus of Laura also being able to pass on the experience she has gained of playing at a higher level.
“We already have a very strong forward line, and with adding ‘Lowey’ to the mix we have an abundance of strikers with different attributes. We are very happy ‘Lowey’ has agreed to join AFC Wimbledon and I’m confident she will do a fantastic job for us.”
Dons Ladies marched 17 points clear at the top of the London and South East Regional Women’s League with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at London Corinthians on Sunday.
Though Wimbledon dominated early on, they needed goalkeeper Shanell Salgado to make a superb save in the first-half to keep her side level.
However, Wimbledon never had to wait too long after half-time to take the lead with Kelly-Jade Whelan’s looping strike deflecting off a defender and finding the back of the net. It was 2-0 on the hour when a quick Wimbledon break ended with Emma Keady lifting the ball over the goalkeeper in style. Corinthians hit back quickly though with a fine strike of their own from 25 yards to set-up a tense finale.
New signing Low so nearly sealed it after entering the fray when she had a good shot well saved, but two was just enough as Wimbledon held on for a victory that takes them closer to title success.
Next up for the Dons is a league match away at Crawley-based Three Bridges FC (2.00 pm kick-off on Sunday).
