Winger on sharing goalscoring responsibilies
Sean Rigg says that everyone in the AFC Wimbledon side must share responsibility for their lack of goals recently, but he believes it’s just a matter of time before it turns around.
During a three-match winning sequence in October, the Dons hit nine goals with striker Lyle Taylor netting four of them, but it’s been a different story this month.
Speaking during a Dons Player interview with Rob Cornell ahead of the trip to Leyton Orient, Rigg said: “It comes down to crosses into the box from the wingers and end product. Whoever is playing out on the wing has to supply the strikers with crosses, whether that’s Callum Kennedy, George Francomb, Andy Barcham or me. We also have to try and chip in with a couple of goals to help the forwards. Even the defenders from set-pieces have to chip in from time to time.
“Every now and then a team will dip in terms of scoring goals, but I am sure it will change. Lyle is a great striker and he has scored some brilliant goals. We are confident that one of the strikers will score going into a game.”
Rigg is fully aware of the importance of tomorrow’s game at Leyton Orient with just three points separating the two teams after 19 games played in League 2.
“It’s a massive game because if we beat them we will be up there,” added Rigg. “They had a great start, but then had a drop in form. We play well away from home against the big teams so I think we will give them a good game.
“It is a long season and we are just three points off the play-offs almost halfway through the season,” added Rigg. “We are in a great position at the moment to push on if we can get back to winning ways similar to the run we went on last month.
With winger Andy Barcham set for a return next month, competition for wide roles is likely to be fierce, but Rigg is up for the challenge.
“I think it’s about keeping your head,” said Rigg. “If you don’t start the season it’s disappointing, but you have to keep working hard in training and then contribute if you get a chance. When I get an opportunity I will try to play well for the team and do my best. If you play well enough you will keep the shirt and it’s the same for all the wingers.”
