Smith: a great group

Defender pleased with preparations for 2014/15

Jack Smith believes that AFC Wimbledon’s new-look squad head into 2014/15 in great shape after developing a team spirit that will serve them well during the new season.

Wimbledon’s new full-back (pictured) has slotted in effectively during a pre-season that ended with victory at Aldershot last Saturday and he says that a training camp in Spain last week served as ideal preparation.

“It is a great group that I have come into,” said Smith. “La Manga obviously helped because it was a really good trip and we had a few singers out there too! We all got involved and that helped with team spirit. I’ve been away on trips with other clubs and seen little cliques and groups in squads, but that hasn’t happened here. Everyone was doing everything together and that bodes well for the season.

“We’ve played all the pre-season matches now and done most of the training. This week will be just about team play, tactics and trying to keep fresh for the 90-minute battle on Saturday.”

Smith, who has amassed over 250 Football League appearances during spells with Watford, Swindon and Millwall, was pleased with the way Wimbledon rounded off pre-season at Aldershot.

“In the second-half we showed our quality,” Smith added. “The first-half did not go according to plan and the manager told us what he thought at half-time. We came out and dominated the second-half and it was nice to score a few goals and keep a clean sheet heading into the season.”
