A superb individual goal from Charlie Fayers sparked a first win of the season for AFC Wimbledon Under-18s on Saturday.
Charlie struck the second in a 2-0 victory as the young Dons earned their first Football League Youth Alliance victory this season at home to Aldershot.Though 1-0 up, Wimbledon were struggling to get the better of their opponents until Charlie’s intervention 10 minutes before the break.
Despite victory, Academy manager, Mark Robinson, admitted it was a worse performance than his side produced in three previous draws this season. However, Oluyesi Daley, in particular, was solid at the back to repel early Aldershot pressure and the hosts grabbed the lead in the 18th minute when Tom Beere’s free-kick was deflected in for a fortuitous opener. The visitors then forced Wimbledon back though, creating half chances that threatened to change the outcome. However, 10 minutes before the break came the moment of the match when Charlie Fayers picked up the ball 10 yards inside the Aldershot half, before beating two challenges and smashing home from just outside the area.
That did produce an improvement from the Dons and Sam Baffour cracked an excellent drive against the upright. In a second-half of few chances, the hosts held on to what they had got, but the impressive Baffour was only inches wide from opening his account near the end. Two was enough for the Dons though and they now have a two-week break before their next competitive game.
