School representing the club wins in style
There was simply no stopping AFC Wimbledon’s representatives at the League 2 Kids Cup Final yesterday as Corpus Christi marched to glory at Wembley.
The New Malden-based catholic primary school stormed to a 7-1 victory against Fleetwood FC’s representatives Hambleton Primary with Jamal Musiala netting four of the goals.
Corpus Christi won the AFC Wimbledon Kids Cup in November, staged at the Kingsmeadow Athletics Centre by the club’s Community Football Scheme (CFS). They came through several local and regional rounds to triumph in the final, which took place before Fleetwood versus Burton in the League 2 play-off final.
It was an unforgettable experience for the Under-11 boys as they had a taste of what being involved in a cup final at Wembley is all about.
The boys had a pre-match tour of Wembley, including a mock press conference, got changed in luxurious dressing rooms at the stadium, and walked up the famous steps to the Royal Box to lift the cup.
Jamal struck again after the break with Ben Elliot and Ethan Etukudo also on target. It did not take long for Corpus Christi to take the lead with Sung Jae-Cho putting them in front early on. Though Hambleton drew level, Corpus Christi were 4-1 up at half-time with Jamal Musiala helping himself to a first-half hat-trick.
It was a great way for Corpus Christi to end undefeated in a six-a-side competition which started with 12,000 boys participating in it last September.
PE Coordinator Robert Sheehan said: “Having already won The London Youth Games and the Under-11s Surrey Cup, the victory topped off an amazing year for the team and I am glad that they will have the memory of playing and winning at Wembley because they really deserve it!
“I'd like to thank AFC Wimbledon, in particular Rob Tuvey and Paul Foley, for giving the boys this wonderful opportunity and for all their support throughout the tournament. I'd also like to thank the team's parents and our school staff, in particular Anthony Mesouroni, Matt Smith and Adam Wicks, who have all helped to coach the team this year.”
Rob Tuvey, who is a coach at AFC Wimbledon’s Community Football Scheme, said: “It was a brilliant day. The whole experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the boys and showed the value of schools entering this competition. It’s a dream for anyone to play at Wembley and the boys certainly took their opportunity.”
