AFC Wimbledon Ladies build on legacy

There are a few tired, but very determined AFC Wimbledon staff around the club today following England’s heartbreak exit from the Women’s World Cup .

Like many Dons fans, AFC Wimbledon Foundation and AFC Wimbledon Ladies took to Twitter as they watched the semi-final drama unfold in Canada, only for the Lionesses to go out in the cruellest of fashion.

AFC Wimbledon Foundation tweeted: “Gutted for England Ladies...Heads up Ladies!! You have made your nation proud. This is just a stepping stone for better things!!”

Laura Bassett’s injury time own goal brought back memories for some long serving Wimbledon supporters of when Dave Bassett put past Dickie Guy, in an FA Cup replay in 1975 against Leeds United, as the gallant Dons made their exit from a knockout competition.

Back in 2015, AFC Wimbledon Ladies pointed out: “Every player has inspired a nation & need 2 hold their heads up high - the winner tonight is Women's football.”

A thriving Ladies and Girls section at the club is looking to build on the legacy of England’s achievements. Following a memorable 2014/15 campaign, statistics show Women’s Football is set to expand at the club next season and that’s sure to experience a further boom following England’s headline-grabbing form.

AFC Wimbledon Ladies drew upon former Wimbledon Ladies forward and now England assistant coach Marieanne Spacey as a figure of inspiration: “There's still time 2 come & join our expanding Club, don't miss out on becoming a future #womble & #Lioness like @marieannespacey”

“We are very proud to announce that we are expanding next season by adding 3 new teams & providing football to over 170 players #COYD”
