Club sponsors YGT sign-up golf ace

Lee Westwood took time out from Ryder Cup preparations to receive a Dons shirt – and the world-famous golfer expressed his admiration for the AFC Wimbledon story.

AFC Wimbledon sponsors Your Golf Travel signed up Westwood as their brand new ambassador on the PGA Tour and YGT co-founder Andrew Harding wasted no time spreading the word about his beloved Dons.

However, Andrew, a Dons supporter for many years, said that Westwood already knew plenty about AFC Wimbledon’s rise.

“Though Lee is a supporter of Nottingham Forest, he also sponsors Worksop Town so he knows about football at lower levels," said Andrew. "Lee knew all about the AFC Wimbledon story and he commented on how well the club had done to rise up again. Hopefully, if Wimbledon draw Nottingham Forest in a cup competition then we can get him along to one of our games in the future.

“I was in the same golf team as Lee in a Pro-Am at Celtic Manor last week. He is a great ambassador for us and hopefully he can help Europe to glory in the Ryder Cup. There is an expectancy that Europe will win this time as they are perceived as the favourites. In the past they have been underdogs and it will be about how they deal with the pressure.”

Former world number one Westwood penned a multi-year deal to represent the leading golf travel provider, joining 2011 Open Championship winner Darren Clarke, European Tour player Rhys Enoch and leading jockey Frankie Dettori in the Your Golf Travel stable.

Westwood will promote YourGolfTours – The US division of the Your Golf Travel brand, which services US customers who are looking to play golf in the UK and Ireland. Westwood will act as an ambassador while playing throughout America on the PGA Tour next season. He will also advise the company strategically on their global portfolio of golfing destinations and resorts as part of the new role.

The 41-year-old will also be a founding ambassador for Yourteetimes.com – an exciting online portal which allows golfers across the United Kingdom to book tee times instantly both domestically and internationally, which is due for launch in late 2014.

Westwood said: ‘I am looking forward to my new role working closely with Darren and Yourgolftravel to continue the growth of their new and existing golfing brands. I will be advising them on growing their golfing product and improving the experiences of golfers travelling internationally and especially within the US.”

Ross Marshall, co-founder of Your Golf Travel, said: “Like Darren, Lee is a very popular, down-to-earth guy and a Ryder Cup hero – not to mention a former world number one. He is a great addition to our team and we look forward to working closely with him to improve golfing experiences for our travellers in the US and around the world."
