AFC Wimbledon picked up a deserved 1-0 win over Stockport County after a period of two weeks without a game.
Despite the prolonged absence our side showed no signs of rustiness and got the all important moment of the game thanks to Harry Pell’s bullet header in the second-half.
It wasn’t all plain sailing however, with Nik Tzanev being called into action as he made a stunning penalty save to deny Myles Hippolyte from the spot in the first period.
In the end we battened down the hatches and kept the Hatters at bay for the majority of the game – with our team recording yet another clean sheet as we marched to an important victory.
Johnnie Jackson made three changes to the side which drew against Bradford City as Lee Brown, Ali Al-Hamadi and Armani Little came in for Jack Currie, Sam Pearson and George Marsh. Meanwhile our newest addition, Saikou Janneh, was named amongst the substitutes.
After a quiet first quarter the game quickly swung into life as referee James Oldham awarded a penalty following a coming together between Tzanev and Kyle Knoyle.
Nevertheless out keeper stood up to the challenge well and brilliantly kept out Hippolyte’s resulting spotkick as the atmosphere cranked up a notch. Josh Davison’s powerful half volley was the only other action of a largely cagey first-half.
It was the Dons who came out firing in the second period as we took the lead in brilliant fashion. Huseyin Biler was found in space on the right, with our full-back picking out Pell with an inch perfect cross as he headed home into the top corner.
We then had claims for a penalty as Davison was seemingly taken down in the area, however mass appeals fell on deaf ears. Biler then fired inches wide of the post after working some space.
Davison then fired wide in stoppage time as we looked to wrap up the win. Bar a few hairy moments in the final few minutes we saw the job through with the minimum of fuss, meaning we are firmly back on track.
