Our side got back to winning ways on Tuesday night as Kwaku Frimpong and Kyle Hudlin notched their first goals in yellow and blue against Crawley Town in a 3-2 victory.
Johnnie Jackson rotated his side for what was our second Papa John’s Trophy group game and it was a move that certainly paid off as we got back into the goalscoring groove.
Hudlin opened the scoring from the spot in a moment that will undoubtedly boost his confidence, following a red card for Crawley’s Mazeed, before the visitors levelled the scores through Jack Powell.
We then made our advantage count in the second-half as Ayoub Assal inspired his side to two more goals - first finishing Isaac Ogundere’s drilled cross before then assisting Frimpong for the Academy product's first senior goal.
It rounded off the night in style for the Dons and even a late consolation from Ludwig Francillette couldn’t take the shine off what was a good team performance.
Jackson made multiple changes to the side which lost away to Carlisle United on Saturday, with debutant Will Jääskeläinen being handed his first appearance in a Dons shirt as he was brought in alongside the likes of Hudlin, Alfie Bendle and Ogundere.
Meanwhile, a strong bench was named including Josh Davison, Alex Pearce and Assal.
It was an energetic start from Wimbledon, typified by a crunching tackle from Ethan Chislett in the opening quarter.
After numerous stoppages for injuries the game had its first talking point as we took the lead. An attempted back-pass from Crawley’s Mazeed went horribly wrong, with the defender deliberately handling the ball in an attempt to prevent Hudlin from scoring. Referee Sam Purkiss duly brandished a red card and pointed to the penalty spot, and the Dons’ striker stepped up to find the bottom right corner.
It was a goal that clearly gave the Huddersfield Town loanee confidence as he went on to see three headers flash high and wide throughout the opening 45 minutes.
There was then good link-up play between Quaine Bartley and Chislett, leading to a dangerous cross from substitute Lee Brown.
Moving into the second-half and it was the depleted visitors who would equalise as a Jack Powell shot took a wicked deflection, leaving Jääskeläinen stranded.
The Dons responded with Bartley seeing a powerful shot saved, whilst Kwaku Frimpong saw a rising drive fly wide of the near post.
It didn’t take long for our side to restore the lead and it was the man in form who got the goal. The effective Ogundere combined well with Frimpong down the right before firing in a low cross that Assal guided into the roof of the net.
A third then arrived shortly afterwards. This time Assal was the provider as he charged into the box before squaring the ball for the waiting Frimpong to claim his first senior goal.
Francillette then scored with the last kick of the game as he volleyed home from close-range, but it was too late for the Red Devils as Wimbledon emerged victorious.
