AFC Wimbledon and Woking played out a 0-0 draw that lacked any real action at both ends of the pitch.
There was little to write home about in both halves of the contest as the National League outfit continuously frustrated the Dons.
Woking did however come closest to claiming a victory, with our new keeper Alex Bass having to be at his best to keep out a miscued clearance by Ethan Sutcliffe.
Overall the game was another good workout for our side as we continue to build up fitness as the majority of the squad was given a runout.
Bass was named in a starting line-up which also featured the likes of Jakes Reeves, Josh Davison and Omar Bugiel.
Josh Hallard, Reuben Ammisah and Sutcliffe featured on the bench for the first time in our 2023/24 pre-season schedule.
There was a chance for the Dons early on as Ryan Johnson slid James Tilley’s in-swinging free-kick over the crossbar.
It proved to be a scrappy first 25 minutes, with both sides having to deal with a lot of aerial deliveries into their respective penalty boxes.
Joe Lewis was called into action just shy of the half hour mark as he did well to block a close range effort. Woking then had an effort that flew just wide of the far post – sending a warning to our backline.
Up the other end Tilley’s shot was easily scooped up by the home keeper as the first-half drew to a close.
We almost had an opening goal in bizarre circumstances as the second 45 began, with Bass’s long distance clearance coming mightily close to looping over the head of the Woking keeper. Rhys Browne then fired just wide for the hosts as the half started at a faster tempo.
A plethora of substitutions were made, with one of the changes, Paris Lock, threatening quickly with a drilled effort that was well blocked.
Aron Sasu then drove into the area before seeing his low cross cut out. Bass made a brilliant save shortly after as he stretched to keep out Sutcliffe’s miscued header.
It proved to be the final action of the game as both sides largely cancelled each other out over the course of the 90 minutes.
We now turn our attentions to our first home pre-season friendly as Championship side QPR visit the Cherry Red Records Stadium.
