Wood plays starring role in cup win against Pompey

Young Dons prove too strong for Portsmouth's second string

6 November 2018

Alan Reeves praised an 'excellent' team performance from AFC Wimbledon's development squad after an impressive victory against a more experienced Portsmouth side.

Tommy Wood (pictured) struck a second-half double to earn a 4-0 win after first-half goals from Bobby Mills and James O'Halloran had put the young Dons in charge. In a Central League Cup group match played at our training ground, Portsmouth's reserve side included first-team squad players with Luke McGee, Anton Walkes, Brandon Haunstrup, and Danny Rose all featuring.

Following the victory, Alan Reeves said: "The boys were excellent and it was up there with our best performances of the season. We did really well because we competed for everything and the players worked their socks off. Nik (Tzanev) did not really have a lot to do, but he came for crosses well and swept up at the back.

"I don't really want to single out individuals, but Tommy Wood was excellent, and not just for the goals he scored. Tommy worked so hard for the team, held the ball up well, and showed good movement. He was very aggressive up front and he probably won 90 per cent of his battles up there."

The Dons marched in front midway through the first-half when James O'Halloran's long throw was flicked on by Wood to set-up Bobby Mills and he finished clinically. The advantage was doubled before half-time when Kyron Stabana found Wood in space down the right and his cross was headed home by O'Halloran.

Pompey simply had no answer to Wood's superb forward play after the break. The striker showed good touch to control a cross from O'Halloran, before producing a fine finish for number three in the 65th minute. Wood then concluded the scoring shortly afterwards with a good poacher's goal after the Dons had won possession through a high press.

AFC Wimbledon: Nik Tzanev, Kyron Stabana, Reuben Collins, Osaze Urhoghide, Tom Scott, Ossama Ashley, Kosta Sparta, Jack Rudoni, Tommy Wood (Donte Lodge Francis), James O'Halloran, Bobby Mills.
