Chesterfield preview

17 August 2012

Views and team news from Stuart

In a five-minute interview with Dons Player at the training ground, Stuart Cash updated us on preparations for tomorrow’s opening League 2 match against Chesterfield.

Our assistant manager confirmed that Louis Harris is in line to make his full debut, while Curtis Osano has a chance of shaking off an ankle injury in time to play, and Rashid Yussuff is in contention to start.

Our competitive season may have started with defeat at Stevenage on Tuesday night, but Stuart believes the squad are capable of putting that behind them.

“We were a bit down after the Stevenage result, but we have had a good meeting with the players,” he said. “The boys have got it out of their systems and we are looking forward to the opening league game of the season against Chesterfield. We have worked on our defensive shape and how we are going to try and nullify Chesterfield and have also worked on our attacking. The lads are all really positive and why shouldn’t they be? Players like Louis Harris will be making their league debuts on Saturday and we want to have a really positive start to the season.”

After relegation from League 1 last season, Chesterfield are one of the promotion favourites to go straight back up with manager John Sheridan having strengthened his squad during the summer. The match is particularly special for Stuart as he played for the Spireites during the 1990s and alongside Sheridan for Nottingham Forest. Stuart’s spell at Chesterfield also included playing in a memorable 4-4 draw at Liverpool in 1992 and he has just been invited to a reunion of former players who played in that match at Anfield.

“I spent two good years at Chesterfield,” said Stuart. “In September we have a reunion for the Liverpool game. A lot of that team went on and played in the FA Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough five years later. I am looking forward to seeing a few of the old faces. I enjoyed my time at Stevenage as they are really lovely people there.”

The full interview with Stuart can be watched on Dons Player and subscribers can also watch an interview with Simon Bassey after his recent testimonial, along with match highlights packages from last season as the excitement builds for the new campaign.
