Steven's pride at being made skipper
Steven Gregory admitted that he played through the pain barrier to be AFC Wimbledon captain in yesterday’s defeat against Gillingham.
The midfielder has been struggling with a hip injury, but he was desperate to play against the league leaders and he passed a late fitness test to wear the captain’s armband once again.
Speaking to Dons Player, Steven said: “I picked up a knock on Tuesday night and I tried to train on it yesterday (Friday), but I could not get through the session. I am pretty sore now. It is an honour to be captain and it is a job I am proud to do for as long as that lasts. I am definitely enjoying it.
“We were too slow to start today and I think that we gave Gillingham too much respect because they are top of the league. That is not the way we want to play as the gaffer wants us to start on the front foot and press teams all over the pitch. We did not do that in the first-half, but we did in the second-half and had a really good go at them.”
The on-loan Bournemouth man added that he felt Wimbledon’s second-half display perhaps merited a share of the spoils in the end.
“We cannot afford to start games that slowly and expect to win,” he added. “We struggled to get out of our own half in the first-half. But we came out in the second-half like we had at Fleetwood. We pressed them, won the ball high up the pitch and got chances from it. I think with the chances and possession that we had, we maybe deserved a point in the end. We have to take the positives from that.”
