Competition for schools

Win a place at Wembley with our award-winning competition

THE chance to play at Wembley, as well as meet professional footballers, is once again being offered by AFC Wimbledon’s award-winning community coaching team.

Schools in Merton have an opportunity to enter Wimbledon’s Girls or Kids Cup with the two winners representing the League 2 club at a regional finals day when a spot at Wembley will be up for grabs.

AFC Wimbledon was last season one of just five clubs in the country to earn recognition from the Football League for the quality of their competition and the Dons are offering even greater incentives for schools to enter this season.

Wimbledon’s player of the year, Sammy Moore, presented the winning schools at the club finals day with their trophies last season. However, this season Sammy will be joined by several of his team-mates at Wimbledon’s finals days on November 29/30 with squad members watching schools compete for glory and, of course, children will be able to meet the players. The two winning schools will also have a chance to watch AFC Wimbledon’s players in a first-team training session and conduct a question and answer session with them. There will also be an opportunity for winning schools, in preparation for the regional finals, to have a coaching session from our AFC Wimbledon coaches.

“Last season was our inaugural tournament and we were so proud to win a Football League award that recognised our efforts. This season’s competition promises to be even better. Due to the success of our competition, we have this season been asked to host the regional finals involving the winning teams from all the other League 2 clubs in the South of England which is a great achievement.” AFC Wimbledon Community Football Scheme Manager, Paul Foley, said:

The Kids Cup is for year five and six children at primary schools with the Girls Cup for year seven and eight children at secondary schools.

AFC Wimbledon had entries from six London boroughs last season with St Mary’s Primary in Carshalton winning the Kids Cup and Phoenix High School in Shepherds Bush clinching the Girls Cup glory.
