Former Dons hot-shot helps team to success again
Former Dons striker Ian Cooke again showed he had lost none of his finishing touch on the greens by helping his team to success at our AFC Wimbledon Golf Day.
Ian, who plundered a remarkable 297 goals in 615 games for Wimbledon during the 1960s and 70s, joined up with Tony Brotherton, Dick Ralph and Don Matthews to win the overall team honour once again.
The winning team are pictured above (Ian pictured second from right next to Barry Ferdinand, Apogee Corporation CEO).
The defending champions led at halfway and held their nerves to win the event at Malden Golf Club, beating off hot competition on the day with event sponsors Apogee Corporation, including our former assistant manager Stuart Cash, as team runners-up. Dick Ralph secured a notable double by winning the individual honour to deny our striker Charlie Strutton, who had to settle for the runners-up spot. Charlie did earn some compensation though by jointly winning the longest drive competition with goalkeeper Seb Brown. Nearest the Pin winners were Barry Ferdinand (Apogee Corporation) and Stuart Cash.
Along with Terry Brown and Stuart Cash joining us on the day, Dickie Guy and Dave Bassett were among past Wimbledon heroes to take part, while Simon Bassey led our current playing squad with Charlie Strutton, Louis Harris, Seb Brown and Jason Prior all taking part. A total of 36 competitors entered the 4-ball competition last Wednesday, braving raid-sodden conditions on the fairways.
Commercial Director, Ivor Heller, said: “We are grateful to our sponsors Apogee Corporation and the players who turned up to make it such a special day. The supporters who took part had a great time. It is a fundraising event that helps us afford the football set-up that we have. The events we as put on are hard work, but made easier when they are successful. We as supporters have to try and support our own events whenever possible.”
