New centre-back on his debut and Torquay challenge
Will Antwi’s AFC Wimbledon debut may have ended with the wrong result on Saturday, but our new centre-back produced an impressive performance considering he had not played first-team football for six months.
Speaking to Dons Player ahead of tonight’s match at home to Torquay United, the 29-year-old revealed that he had been keeping himself fit by training with Dagenham & Redbridge while he was without a club. Will’s wealth of experience during a career which has involved promotions with the Daggers and Wycombe Wanderers certainly helped him through. The Ghanaian international, who has played alongside the likes of Michael Essien for his national team, also had no problems settling in at Wimbledon as he previously played for Terry Brown at Aldershot and linked up with our goalkeeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz at a PFA coaching course last season.
“I played for the gaffer when I was at Aldershot and we got to a play-off final and semi-final in the Conference, but we were beaten on both occasions on penalties,” Will said. “I know the gaffer well and I know how definitive he is in his style of play. It is a great style of play which he implements, which makes it a joy to come and work for him again.
“I had been training with Dagenham during pre-season so fitness is not a problem for me. I thought it was a half decent performance from the team on Saturday, though it was marred by the sending off and the result. But the boys kept going and gave 100 per cent. Even when we were down to 10 men, we played good, quality football. We just have to take that into tonight’s game.”
