Striker aims to end Wimbledon loan on a high

Paul McCallum is determined to end his Wimbledon loan spell with a bang after earning a player of the month award for January.

Paul was today announced as Match magazine’s League 2 player of the month for January and he says that his goalscoring exploits with Wimbledon have surpassed his own expectations.

“It was a great month for me as I was starting games and scoring goals to help Wimbledon do really well,” Paul said. “I got the winner against Rochdale and then two goals against Wycombe Wanderers. I maybe should have scored more goals in that game to help us to victory, but that’s the way it goes as a striker.

“I expected to maybe score a couple of goals during my spell at Wimbledon, but not four goals in three games. Hopefully, I will get a chance to start again and get a couple more to help the club move away from the relegation zone.”

Match magazine selected Paul as the winning League 2 player for January “due to his impact and goals.” Previous winners in the division this season have included Ashley Grimes (Rochdale), Tom Pope (Port Vale) and Ade Akinfenwa (Northampton Town).

Paul, who is due to go back to West Ham on 23 February, scored his first Wimbledon goal in the 3-2 win at Torquay United on New Year’s Day, before striking the winner at Rochdale and then notching a double against Wycombe (the picture above shows him celebrating his second goal with Stacy Long).
