Neal Ardley makes first January signing

We are delighted to announce Neal Ardley’s first signing during the January transfer window with the addition of former Bury midfielder Peter Sweeney.

The 28-year-old, who was released by the League 1 club yesterday, has signed on the dotted line this afternoon after complete a medical.

Sweeney, who started his career with Millwall and played in the 2004 FA Cup Final against Manchester United, has also had spells with Leeds, Grimsby Town and Stoke City.

The midfield playmaker had been with Bury since 2010 and became a favourite with their fans after scoring the club’s goal of the season against Walsall during the last campaign.

Wimbledon manager Neal Ardley believes he has pulled off a transfer coup with the addition of the experienced midfielder.

“Peter has played at a high level and played as a youngster for Millwall against Man United in the FA Cup Final,” Neal Ardley said. “He has also played for other clubs at a higher level and he is a fantastic signing for us. He wanted to come back to London for family reasons and we are pleased to give him that opportunity.

"We were looking at signing him in November on loan, but we had a lot of players on loan then. We have kept tabs on him since then and Bury manager Kevin Blackwell has been a big help in making this happen. He is an experienced central midfielder with a wonderful left foot.”
