New signing on sparking the Dons
Peter Sweeney believes he can provide the creative spark to lift AFC Wimbledon up the League 2 table after signing on the dotted line today.
Speaking to Dons Player shortly after completing his medical, the 28-year-old said it was an easy decision to join the club once he had spoken to Neal Ardley.
The former Bury and Millwall midfielder, who wanted to move back down south due to family reasons, also reckons he is approaching his peak as a player.
“I had a great time at Bury and played the best football of my career there so I will always have a soft spot for the club,” he said. “Some people will says that I have taken a step down from League 1 football, but I would not have come here if I did not think Wimbledon were ambitious. The manager did not really have to sell the club to me. I know that Neal Ardley had a great playing career and once I spoke to him on the phone and he told me how I interested he was in signing me, it was a no-brainer. It all got done within a couple of days.
I aim to get on the ball and pass it, but I know that as a midfielder you also have to work hard and do the other side of things well. “ “I like to create goals – that is my main strength.
Sweeney, who once played in an FA Cup Final for Milwall against Manchester United, added that he was not put off by Wimbledon’s position near the foot of League 2 – and he is determined to help the club to safety as soon as possible.
“My Millwall days were brilliant to play in an FA Cup Final as a young kid and play in Europe,” he added. “I then moved to Stoke and Leeds and have played up north for different clubs for many years. But I am now looking forward to doing well at Wimbledon. The team is more than capable of staying up. When you are down near the bottom you want to try and get away from there come the end of February. We do not want to be looking over our shoulders and the sooner we get the points the better so that we can move away from the bottom four.”
