Rashid back in the frame

22 January 2013

Neal's team update for Port Vale

Rashid Yussuff has boosted Neal Ardley’s midfield options by returning to full training after he shrugged off a knee injury.

Manager Neal Ardley has confirmed that the 23-year-old midfielder (pictured) will be back in the mix for Port Vale, weather permitting, if he comes through training tomorrow. However, centre-back Will Antwi (hip) faces a late fitness test if the match goes ahead and Curtis Osano (calf) is also doubtful. Warren Cummings may make the squad after shaking off a hamstring injury.

Speaking to Dons Player, Neal Ardley has called on his players to redouble their efforts with a crunch spell of fixtures coming up in the battle for League 2 survival.

“We had a good chat with the players this morning,” said the Wimbledon manager. “We have a very tough schedule coming up and there has to be a lot of focus and professionalism. The coaching staff are looking at all our options going into games to make sure that the boys are as prepared and as strong as they can be going into games. But the players have to put their efforts in as well and hopefully we can get through this tough period.”

The Dons today held their training session at Goals in New Malden with pitches at our regular training base still frozen over. Neal Ardley has stressed that his squad will prepare for Thursday’s match as if it will definitely be on and he hopes to have one or two selection posers for the visit of League 2 leaders Port Vale, in particular, up front. With Paul McCallum having extended his loan from West Ham and Byron Harrison now competing with Jack Midson for a starting place up front, they are forward options the Wimbledon manager is pleased to have.

“Paul has done very well during the last few games,” added Neal Ardley. “He is knuckling down now and getting to know what playing in this league is all about. Hopefully, that will continue as it is not going to be easy on Thursday. But if we can get the ammunition to Paul then he may be able to keep his scoring run going again.”

The full video interview with Neal Ardley, including a transfer update from the boss, can now be viewed on Dons Player. We will tomorrow feature an interview with Jack Midson on our premium content site.
