“I think when you go away the players get that extra focus,” said Sammy. “We will be training, eating and sleeping basically so there will not be much time away from the hotel. This training camp will be vital though because it will get us in the right frame of mind for the new season and everyone will get to know their jobs. It is different scenery for us from New Malden and we will be doing a lot of double training sessions. On Friday we have an open training session, which will be good for the fans to see what it’s all about. Obviously, the match against Monza follows on Saturday and then a week later it’s game-on.

“We are playing a different style now and I played in a similar sort of way when I was coming through at the Chelsea Academy; it is all about getting on the ball, moving it on quickly and taking up another angle. I think it is going really well so far. We don’t know too much about Monza, but as an Italian team we expect them to be good on the ball and it might be a good idea to see how they do things so that we can learn from them.”

Looking back I do not think I was as fit as I could have been last season, but I went away during the close season and made sure that I came back super-fit, sharp and ready for the new season.
