London Cup tie tonight

13 March 2013

Squad named for Cray Wanderers match

AFC Wimbledon will once again hand opportunities to the club’s youngsters in tonight’s London Senior Cup tie against Cray Wanderers.

Defender Owen Roberts, who scored the winner in Wimbledon’s Surrey Senior Cup win at Chipstead, is one of 12 players from Mark Robinson’s Under-18s squad to get a call-up.

Frankie Merrifield (pictured), Warren Cummings, Charlie Strutton and Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz are the first-teamers due to feature.

The tie, which is a 7.45 pm kick-off at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, will bring back memories of those memorable clashes against Kent outfit Cray Wanderers during the 2004/05 season.

Cray Wanderers were the side that ended AFC Wimbledon’s proud record of 78 matches without defeat – the longest unbeaten run of league matches in English senior football – when they won 2-0 at Hayes Lane on 4 December, 2004. However, the Dons gained revenge with a 3-2 Bryco Cup win on 1 February, 2005.

Cray also provided the opposition when the Dons celebrated winning the Ryman Division One South title in style later that season. On 23 April, 2005, Cray formed a guard of honour as Wimbledon’s players came onto the pitch at the Cherry Red Records Stadium and Dave Anderson’s men went onto win 3-0 with goals from Ryan Gray, Shane Smeltz and Richard Butler.

AFC Wimbledon squad for tonight: Jack Greenaway, Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz, Matt Cunnington, Oluyesi Daley, Owen Roberts, Tom Beere, Khan Williams-Mitchell, Youssouf Bamba, Chace Jacquart, Dan Pearse, Sam Baffour, George Oakley, Greg Hayden, Warren Cummings, Frankie Merrifield, Charlie Strutton.

Entry prices are £5 for adults and £2 for concessions at tonight’s game.
