Longest-serving player is back among the goals
Luke Moore believes Wimbledon are now capable of a strong finish to the season after easing their relegation fears at Southend last night.
AFC Wimbledon’s longest-serving player made a big impact as a substitute last night with a goal which was his first since the defeat against Rochdale in September.
Speaking to Rob Cornell on Dons Player, Luke admitted it was a relief to finally hit the target again, but he was more concerned with ensuring Wimbledon’s League 2 safety in the coming weeks.
“The dressing room was buzzing afterwards, especially after the result on Saturday too,” Luke said. “We picked up the three points and everyone is happy at the moment, but we have a lot of hard work still to do. We have to go away to Aldershot next, which is a tough place to go to.
“We want to get as high as we possibly can in the league and make sure we are safe as soon as possible. I feel that with the squad the gaffer has put together we can push up that table now. If we apply ourselves in the right way then we can go anywhere and get a result now.”
In previous seasons Luke has made his name as a goalscoring midfielder, but he has often been called upon to do a job for the team by Neal Ardley on the flanks during this campaign. That has restricted his chances to chip in with goals from midfield, but Luke showed he had lost none of his scoring touch with that emphatic strike last night.
“It was great set-up by Jesse Darko and the ball landed perfectly at my feet – it was relief when it went in,” Luke added. “It has been a while since I scored my last goal and I was delighted to get it. Hopefully, that will be the start of more to come from me. The response from the lads has been brilliant since the Cheltenham defeat. I think that was a blip as we have been good in 2013. Hopefully, we have put that loss behind us and we can be looking up the table now.”
