The manager's post-match reaction
Neal Ardley saluted George Francomb for working hard to recapture his best form after the midfielder’s man of the match performance helped earn a battling point against Newport County AFC.
During an interview for Dons Player after another memorable Wimbledon fightback, Neal Ardley spoke about Francomb’s important contribution after he scored and set one up in the 2-2 draw.
“George had a slow start to the season and he knows that,” said Neal. “But he’s got the bit between his teeth now. His set-piece delivery is fantastic and he’s scored another goal today. We are getting there with him. It’s been a long time coming, but I’m really pleased for George because he’s worked hard to get to where he is.”
minute.thThe Dons yet again came from behind to get something from a game that appeared to be a lost cause when Newport captain Michael Flynn put his side 2-0 up from the penalty spot in the 47
Neal Ardley praised his side’s tenacity to come back from the dead in such circumstances, but he was far from pleased with another slow start from his side.
“It should not have been like that in the first place,” said Neal. “They were good in the first-half, but we were awful. I was just trying to get us through to half-time without being 2-0 down. At half-time we made changes and I was confident that we could go on and win the game if the players did what I said. Then 40 seconds in and you start wondering whether that’s going to be the case.
“But credit to them and one thing that the fans can be proud of in this team is the immense character that they show in adversity.”
