Neal calls-up young trio

Team news for friendlies at Havant and Aldershot

Neal Ardley has called up a trio of players from the Under-18s for Wimbledon’s pre-season friendly at Havant & Waterlooville tonight.

Centre-back Ryan Sweeney (pictured), attacking midfielder Egli Kaja and left-back Ben Harrison will all be in Wimbledon’s squad for the match at Westleigh Park (7.45 pm kick-off).

With the Dons also in action at Aldershot on Saturday (3.00 pm kick-off), Neal will field a mixture of senior players and youngsters in both fixtures.

George Francomb will be assessed later today to decide whether he can play at Havant & Waterlooville after he picked up an arm injury during the trip to Spain. Andy Frampton and Barry Fuller are also doubts for the fixture at Aldershot after they both picked up ankle knocks.

Trialist Ferdinand Takyi will be given another chance tonight after his impressive forward display for the Under-21s at Canvey Island on Tuesday night. Right-back George Pilbeam, who was previously at Brentford, will also be involved tonight as part of his trial spell.

Havant & Waterlooville finished sixth in Conference South last season with manager Lee Bradbury coming so close to leading the Hawks into the play-offs as they missed out on goal difference. Chris Arthur reignited his career at Havant and his impressive performances on the wing earned a move to the Dons last summer.

Speaking after the first-team’s return from a three-day training camp in Spain, Neal Ardley said: “The squads will be reasonably mixed. We will bring in three lads from the Under-18s who have impressed in pre-season.

“The Spain trip was fantastic in terms of training and preparation because the facilities were excellent. It was great for team bonding too. A few players picked up knocks and that put a dampener on it a bit. We will assess these players today to decide whether they should be risked.”
