A seven-goal thiller on a waterlogged pitch
Wimbledon travel to Newport County tonight hoping for third time lucky after two previous postponements, but the photograph above certainly shows that footballers played in more testing conditions during the 1930s!
This photograph at a rather wet Plough Lane was taken on 26 November, 1938, and it was an entertaining Isthmian League encounter considering the adverse pitch conditions.
Wimbledon were edged out 4-3 by The Casuals (before they merged with Corinthians to form Corinthian Casuals) with Harry Stannard netting twice for the Dons and Ron Head also on target.
The Wimbledon team on the day was as follows: George King; CJ Ladd, Cliff George; JC Black, Bert Bridge, Jack Fuller; Jimmy Nash, Harry Stannard, Ron Head, Maurice Ringrose, Eric Zenthon.
We wish to thank Bert Dale for providing us with the photograph and information.
