Sammy ready for Newport

10 February 2014

Team news ahead of trip to South Wales

Sammy Moore today came through training unscathed and he’s likely to be available for the scheduled match at Newport County after swelling around his eye receded.

First-team coach Simon Bassey said that Wimbledon’s all-action midfielder (pictured) came off with impaired vision on Saturday against Rochdale, but Sammy will be fine to soldier on tomorrow night if the game gets the go-ahead. Defender Will Antwi has also handed the Dons a boost by returning to training after a hamstring strain, but right-back Barry Fuller is unlikely to feature after suffering a knee injury against Rochdale.

Simon Bassey spoke to Dons Player at the training ground this afternoon about preparations for Newport and talked about putting things right after Saturday’s disappointing showing against Rochdale.

“We came in early this morning and had a meeting with the boys to talk about Saturday’s game,” Simon said. “We opened it up and the players had their input. We are under no illusions that Saturday was not good enough, especially for the last half hour, but we discussed that and now we move on. We talked about where we felt we went wrong, but then we dusted ourselves down and got back on the training pitch.

“It was a fairly light session and it included a few pointers for tomorrow night’s game. Hopefully, we can produce a really positive performance at Newport.”

Former Dons Christian Jolley, Lee Minshull, Max Porter and Ryan Jackson were all in Newport’s squad last time out when they drew 0-0 at Southend United and Ismail Yakubu has also played a big part in their success. Newport have failed to win in five matches since the Boxing Day victory at Wycombe Wanderers, but they are still eighth in League 2 after an excellent start following promotion.
