Midfielder steps up his recovery
Peter Sweeney is closing in on a return to the first-team squad after playing for Wimbledon’s development squad on Wednesday.
Sweeney (pictured above) featured in a match against a British Army representative squad, which was played at the Aldershot Military Stadium, and Neal Ardley is planning to step-up the midfielder’s fitness with a run-out in the London Senior Cup next Wednesday.
“We considered putting Peter in the squad for Saturday, but it is a little bit too early,” said Neal. He will probably gain more from staying back and training with Shaun North and the Under-21s on Saturday. Peter could have a game next week against Cray Wanderers and that should put enough of an edge on him so that he can be a serious candidate for the following Saturday. We have a tough run of games coming up in March and Peter will add competition for places.”
Sweeney last featured in the first-team against Plymouth on 28 December and he has been fitted with custom-made orthotics after breaking a metatarsal in his foot during that match.
The Under-21s lost 4-0 against a strong Army representative side, a team preparing for an international services football tournament in the near future.
