Kit launch countdown recalls a big FA Cup victory
The club’s new Admiral kits will be launched on Sunday, 29 June and our countdown continues with a number that recalls Wimbledon’s record victory.
Ray Armfield trawled through the archives to highlight an impressive FA Cup run during the club’s non league days – and it all started with a rather big win at Plough Lane.
15 – Polytechnic taught a lesson
The 1929/30 season saw an epic FA Cup run by Wimbledon with an astonishing 36 goals wracked up in five qualifying rounds. And the avalanche started against Polytechnic, beaten 15-2 at Plough Lane – which unsurprisingly remains a club record victory – despite the hosts resting four key players. The legendary ‘Doc’ Dowden helped himself to six goals, Ralph Brown bagged five, Mick O’Brien got a couple, and the scoring was rounded off by Taffy Lloyd and Charlie Christie. The Dons then beat West Norwood 3-0, Tooting Town 6-2, Epsom Town 7-1 and Guildford City 5-1, before losing 1-4 to Northfleet United in the First Round Proper.
